Refuse To Bend (IRE), bay horse foaled 17 March 2000, bred by Moyglare Stud Farm, was a son of Sadler's Wells out of Market Slide (by Gulch), and a brother to Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle.

Trained initially by Dermot Weld and later by Saeed bin Suroor for Godolphin, he was a top-class miler whose brilliance at two and three marked him among the finest sons of Sadler's Wells to excel over the classic mile.

Refuse To Bend made a winning debut at Gowran Park before capturing the National Stakes at the Curragh, establishing himself as Ireland's leading juvenile. At three, he won the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial and then the Sagitta 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, defeating a strong field to remain unbeaten in four starts.

Though disappointing in the Derby, he returned to form with victory in the Desmond Stakes and later, under Godolphin colours, added two Group 1 triumphs at four — the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, defeating Warrsan and Soviet Song among others. His career record stood at 15 starts, 7 wins, 1 third, earning £780,896.

Retired to Kildangan Stud and later Whitsbury Manor Stud, Refuse To Bend proved a versatile sire, imparting class and scope to his progeny. His best offspring included Sarafina, winner of the Prix de Diane and Prix Saint-Alary; Wavering, also successful in the Prix Saint-Alary; and Glencadam Gold, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap in Australia. His progeny were noted for their soundness and late-maturing quality, often excelling over middle distances. Refuse To Bend died of a heart attack at Haras du Logis, Normandy, on 10 February 2012, aged twelve. His legacy endures through his daughters and sons who continue to influence pedigrees across Europe and Australasia, a testament to the enduring potency of the Sadler's Wells line blended with the speed of Gulch.
