Eight times winning grey colt, he came to the yard at the end of 1966 from trainer Denys Smith.
Grey Steel won for the first time at Ripon in May 1967, and that season he also won at Teesside and Lanark. The following year he won at Thirsk, York, Teesside and Edinburgh and further victories came at Hamilton and Lanark in 1969.
