The fields around Sheriff Hutton are home to broodmares, yearlings and foals. Keeping company with them are older horses in retirement, and horses having a break from training. Some of the younger horses will be prepared to race as two year olds, whilst others are left to grow and fill out before starting out on careers over jumps. Over the past years we have had considerable success with home bred horses bred in conjunction with our owners.

Many of our owners keep some of their ex-racehorses for breeding. Successful mares in the past few seasons include Word Perfect, Bow Bridge and Strong Hand. The mares and foals receive careful attention and enjoy the freedom of vast fields and paddocks in the beautiful countryside around Sheriff Hutton.

Nine times winner William's Well flew the flag for the yard in the early 2000s, notably winning the Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon.  Bow Peep is another successful broodmare, and has produced the home bred Listed winner Bow Bridge who won the Marygate Stakes at York in 2005 and was placed in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes. Bow Bridge has gone on to be a successful dam providing the yard with a number of winners.

Other home bred horses to win for the yard are Middlethorpe, Property Zone and Kings Square (all bred by Alan Black out of the mare Prime Property), Acomb, Happy Times (MW Easterby), Elvington Boy (Mr and Mrs Hodgson), Strong Hand and her offspring Strong Man, Word Perfect and Snappy (Mrs Jean Turpin), Perfect Peak (David Spence out of Word Perfect) Pirner's Brig (Mrs Rhind), Towbee, Bowson Fred and Black Annis Bower (Mrs Jarvis) and Alluring Star (Bernard Bargh).

Some winning families have raced for the yard for generations. Bowson Fred has won twice as a two year old and three times at the age of four, another successful son of Bow Bridge. We have also been to the winner's enclosure with multiple scorer Perfect Pasture and Perfect Peak, both Word Perfect's successful offspring, and with Strong Man whose dam Strong Hand was a winner for the Easterby yard.

And of course who can forget our Winter Derby winner Gentleman's Deal, who sired a number of winners at the yard, including multiple winner We'll Deal Again whose dam, Emma Amour, also raced for the yard. Gentleman's Deal was also the sire of multiple winners Alluring Star, Fame Again and Strong Man.
